Established in 1979, Porters English Restaurant showcases some of the finest English cuisine as well as serving up some of the country's most well-loved classic dishes. Founded by the 7th Earl of Bradford. With such a great heritage, they have now embarked on an extensive refurbishment and new menu celebrating the best of British for the first time in its thirty-four year existence.
Porters English Restaurant's overall look and feel has been truly transformed from a 'gentleman's library' into something more English and contemporary with notable design features including; Doctor Who's time travelling tardis, a unique take on the famous Last Supper painting with 17 British celebrities and icons as well as the Earl of Bradford himself by talented artist Jason Christopher. Guests can also feast their eyes on a contemporary take on the Union Jack flag, a Britannia mural and other great comic book heroes such as Billy Bunter and Desperate Dan adorning the walls. The bar has also been modernised with a stylish stainless steel finish and eye- catching artwork.
English food has recently seen a huge resurgence in popularity, with leading British chefs championing British cuisine, ensuring that we are a nation renowned for its quality and creative fare and Porters have devised a new menu celebrating this. Diners can enjoy a selection of warming and nostalgic British starters, all originating from different regions. Tease your taste buds with the Miniature Yorkshire Puddings with Smoked Mackerel, or why not sample a Warm Scotch Egg, which, contrary to popular belief, originated in London and not Scotland as the name would suggest.
Porters English Restaurant is renowned for its world famous pies, with each being hand-cooked on site delivering the freshest and the most heavenly puff and short crust pastry pies with wholesome and hearty fillings. Porters actually invented the Lamb and Apricot Pie but also serve more modern combinations such as Three Bean, Spicy Lentil and Vegetable Pie. The venue also showcases many of England's classic 'hard to beat' dishes such as, Beer Battered Cod and Toad in the Hole as well as the Porters highlight of Steak and Kidney Pudding.
For puddings or 'Afters' you can pop in for a delicious treat during the afternoon without the need to have any 'Befores'. Their range of a dozen 'All homemade, All delicious' ice creams is extensive and includes some very interesting mouth-watering combinations. Satisfy your sweet tooth with mouth-watering concoctions such as Maple Syrup Ice Cream, Lime Marmalade Ice Cream and Banana Cinnamon & Rum Ice Cream.
Puddings don't stop there. Choose from one of the delicious hot and cold puddings including, Summer Pudding, Eton Mess or the delectable Dark Chocolate Pudding, not to mention Spotted Dick and the most marvellous Treacle Tart with homemade Yellow Custard
Further to the daily specials and a la carte menu, the venue offers impressive afternoon and evening fixed price menus, including a post-theatre diner for an extremely reasonable £14.00 for two courses from the extensive set menu which, contrary to the name, is available all day, everyday. These include full sized, homely portions of dishes taken from the a la carte menu, ensuring that you do not miss out on any of the Porters pie goodness.
On seeing a gap in the market, The Earl of Bradford (Richard Bradford) opened Porters English Restaurant with the aim of providing reasonably priced real English food. This is a value he still stands by and is why the restaurant continues to have a bustling trade. He was President of the Master Chefs of Great Britain for 13 years before becoming Chairman of the Restaurant Association of Great Britain and he is also the first British representative on the Board of the Nation Restaurant in the USA.
Richard can regularly be seen campaigning for changes to improve the industry on a number of subjects including credit card fees, VAT, and the proposed extension of parking hours in the city of Westminster, which he believed to be detrimental to business the area.
For those who wish to learn a few of the secrets from Porters English Restaurant, the venue has two cookbooks on how to create their delicious creations. Learn some of the English classics with Porters English Cookery Bible or if you prefer seasonal cooking with seasonal produce, try Porters Season Celebrations.
The venue also has two impressive private rooms, providing you with a perfect space whether you are organising a private party or a conference. The first available is the Gallery, which can accommodate dinner for up to 40 people and there is a private dining area downstairs for up to 80 people with very reasonably priced set menus for both areas available.
So for a taste of the Best of British visit Porters English Restaurant.
