Posted by: Newsroom - 05-28-2010, 07:20 AM - Forum: Wine UK - No Replies

English wines will take centre stage next week as vineyards, wine merchants, farm shops, delicatessens, hotels, pubs and restaurants celebrate English Wine Week 2010, which takes place from Saturday 29th May to Sunday 6th June and includes the Spring Bank Holiday.

English Wine Week is a countrywide campaign to highlight English wines. During the Week, vineyards across the country, from the Scilly Isles to Yorkshire, will be opening their doors to welcome visitors with tours, tastings and special events or offers. Other local and regional outlets will also be supporting English wines by holding in house tastings, special menus and many other exciting promotional activities.

Some of the highlights of this year’s English Wine Week include the Mercure Hotel Group whose key hotels in England will be offering their dining guests a complimentary glass of wine from a local vineyard during the Week. Other participants include The Wine Society and Laithwaites Wine. In Devon, local vineyards are collaborating again to host Devon Wine Week, ensuring that on every day of the Week there will be an event or activity either at a vineyard or local outlet. Working alongside them are retailers and restaurants that will be highlighting English wines with their menus – showing just how delicious the marriage of local food is with locally-sourced wine is. In Wales, Welsh Wine Week will also be celebrated with activities taking place in a number of vineyards.

There certainly promises to be a buzz about English wines this coming week. Visitors will be able to discover just how delicious English wines are and how readily accessible they are proving to be.

Enthusiasm for and interest in English wines continues to grow. Recent news of their success in this year’s international competitions further illustrates their world class quality. Retailers are responding positively, with listings in major chains as well as independent wine merchants, both on the high street and online. More English wines are also available through the on trade, from top London restaurants to local eateries in the wine regions.

With the summer season just around the corner, English Wine Week provides the perfect opportunity to celebrate the wines that are produced on our doorstep. All events and participating outlets are listed by region and by date on the English Wine Week Website englishwineweek.co.uk, which is constantly updated.

Graham Campbell At The Lake Of Menteith Hotel
Posted by: Newsroom - 05-26-2010, 08:40 PM - Forum: Restaurant News - No Replies

Graham Campbell, one of the youngest chefs in Scotland to gain a Michelin star, has joined The Lake of Menteith Hotel in Perthshire as Head Chef.

Oban-born Campbell (27) has joined the Lake after working at Duisdale House on the Isle of Skye. He gained his Michelin award in 2008 when he was based at the Ballachulish Hotel.

Ian Fleming, owner of The Lake of Menteith Hotel said; “We are delighted to welcome a chef with Graham’s reputation to the Lake. His passion, drive and talent will take our food offering to new dimensions and the feedback we’ve already had from diners in both our restaurant and more casual Port Bar has been fantastic.”

Highlights on Graham’s new menus at the Lake include Hand Dived Orkney Scallops with Aubergine and Watermelon and Green Pepper & Honey Coated Breast of Aylesbury Duck, Sweet Potato Puree, Kale, Beetroot and Red Wine Jus. He has already made his mark at the hotel, having scooped a Chef Médaille d’Or for Dinner Excellence at the recent Scottish Hotel Awards 2010. Owner Ian Fleming was awarded an Entrepreneur Special Commendation 2010 at the awards ceremony, in recognition of the continued growth and success of the Lake during very challenging trading conditions for the hospitality industry.

Graham Campbell said, “From a young age, I wanted to be a chef, it was all I was ever interested in. I’m delighted to have joined an award winning hotel like The Lake of Menteith and I’m looking forward to working with Ian Fleming and doing what I do best - which is to create flavoursome, clean and simple casual dining dishes at lunch time and innovative and flavoursome combinations from fantastic Scottish and British ingredients in the restaurant for dinner. It is hard to nail down what my style is, so I can only say that it is uniquely mine. The finishing touch is that our customers can soak up one of the most exceptional views in Scotland and it’s not even on the menu, it’s free of charge!”

Graham Campbell joins The Lake of Menteith at an exciting time in the hotel’s development. Recent continued investment has resulted in two new stunningly refurbished lake view suites, complete with freestanding baths, showers for two and spacious dressing and seating areas. Rich colours and luxurious fabrics have created indulgent retreats for two which are a perfect complement to the waterfront location.

Graham Campbell started his career working part-time at the Caledonian Hotel in Oban. He entered a cookery competition which left the head chef so impressed that he was offered a full time job. After progressing to commis chef and then sous chef, Graham headed south to Rochdale to work at celebrity chef Andrew Nutter’s restaurant before moving on to Paul Heathcote’s signature restaurant, Longridge in Preston.
The Lake of Menteith Hotel was purchased by Ian Fleming in 2005 and enjoys a unique waterfront setting at the Port of Menteith. Only an hour’s drive from Glasgow and Edinburgh, the 16 bedroomed hotel has undergone a comprehensive refurbishment over the past five years and is decorated in the warm, welcoming style of a classic New England waterfront hotel. The muted tones, light fabrics and extensive use of local timber and stone perfectly compliment its unique lakeside location.

English Wines Take Four Gold Medals
Posted by: Newsroom - 05-25-2010, 11:21 AM - Forum: Wine UK - No Replies

It’s been another great year for English and Welsh wine in the major international wine competitions, whose results were announced at the London International Wine & Spirits Trade Fair.

English wines impressed particularly the judges at the International Wine Challenge (IWC) and Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) with no less than 4 Gold medals shared amongst three producers Camel Valley, Nyetimber and Ridgeview. Along with the results from The International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC), English and Welsh wines won 120 awards, more than ever before.

Two of the Gold medals were awarded in the IWC to Nyetimber’s Blanc de Blancs 2001 and Camel Valley Noir Rosé Brut 2008. This was a second successive year as a Gold medal winner for Camel Valley and a first major win in this competition for Nyetimber.

The two other Gold medals were won in Decanter World Wine Awards by Ridgeview Wine Estate for their Knightsbridge Blanc de Noirs 2006 and Grosvenor Blanc de Blancs 2006, which also took the regional Trophy. UK doubled the number of silver medal winners in this year’s DWWA.

The International Wine & Spirit Competition saw three times as many Silver medals as were awarded last year. Whilst the majority of came from the sparkling wine sector, there were notable wins for Bolney Wine Estate’s Pinot Noir Red 2008 and Eglantine’s dessert wine North Star 2006¸ which were both awarded Silver Best in Class.

New Welsh vineyard Ancre Hill Estate in Monmouthshire won a Silver Medal in the DWWA and Bronze in the IWSC for the same still wine – their White Welsh Regional Wine 2008 – showing the ongoing developments and success from the Welsh wine industry.

“It’s just great to see the recognition that English and Welsh wines have gained through this year’s awards,” comments Julia Trustram Eve, Marketing Manager of English Wine Producers. “Competition is tough out there and to be recognized by the highly professional groups of judges at this international level certainly shows that our wines are world class.”

The news about these English successes sets a positive start to the industry’s national promotional campaign English Wine Week which starts on 29th May and continues to 6th June. Many of the winning producers are taking part, as well as a number of key outlets. All details and news are available on englishwineweek.com.

These and many other English and Welsh wines will soon face scrutiny in the UK’s own national awards – the English & Welsh Wine of the Year Competition, which takes place in mid June. This is the only competition in the world where the judges are all Masters of Wine. The results will be announced at the end of June.

A series of bespoke interactive cooking skills stations will be held in the theatre foyers between the main stage presentations. Local and up-and-coming chefs and cookery school lecturers will give demonstrations and display the skills necessary for all avid cooks; for example, knife skills, pasta making, pizza making, expert tips for the perfect pastry and how to fillet a fish.

Good Food Café
As well as serving coffee and bites to eat, the ‘Good Food Café’ will be showing archive footage from favourite cookery programmes such as Keith Floyd, Master Chef, Oliver’s Twist and Saturday Kitchen.

Books for Cooks
Each theatre will offer a bookshop selling a full range of classic and most recently launched cookbooks, with limited editions and signed copies available. There will also be opportunities for book signings with the celebrity chefs before and after the shows.

Starter for Ten Quiz
There will be Love Cooking Experts roaming around the theatre foyer in between presentations who will help with any queries as well as offering a ‘starter for ten’ cookery quiz to the theatergoers. Those who succeed with answering the questions correctly will receive a £10 voucher from one of the major sponsors.

Love Cooking Membership
As part of the ticket price, theatergoers will receive the limited edition full-colour ‘Love Cooking Recipe Book’, which includes 60 recipes from the celebrity chefs on the tour. Also included in the ticket price will be a special membership password that allows access to the official ‘Love Cooking Festival Video’ where each of the chef’s presentations from the tour can be viewed.

“I’m really looking forward to cooking some of my new recipes and old favourites at Love Cooking. I want to encourage everyone to hold dinner parties in their homes and have fun cooking for their friends, what could be better?”
James Martin

“Food and cooking is a huge part of my life and it can be an enjoyable and fulfilling part of everyone’s life. At Love Cooking I want to show people how cooking can be restorative, nurturing and incredibly satisfying, even as much as eating the dishes themselves”.
Rachel Allen

“Love Cooking seems to me to be the next step in showing people how to cook. Along with the many years I’ve enjoyed in TV, I’m really looking forward to being on the Love Cooking stage in front of a live audience reliving the Great British Classic dishes we should all be proud of.”
Gary Rhodes

“We have seen a huge increase in the last 10 years in the level of interest in food and cooking in the UK, largely influenced by cookery programmes on television and the emergence of the celebrity chef.

Love Cooking is an exciting, new style of cookery event that solely focuses on the skill and craft of cooking and the excitement of watching it performed live on stage. It aims to provide cooking enthusiasts of all levels the opportunity to get up a close and learn from some of their favourite chefs, who regularly inspire them to pick up the apron!”
Tim Etchells, Managing Director of Single Market Events
