The organisers of RAW – the artisan wine fair, which took place May 20th-21st at the Old Truman Brewery, are pleased to announce that the independent fair was a huge success, with just over 3,000 visitors attending across the two days. Among the crowds were 1,900 trade visitors including sommeliers and managers from some of London’s top restaurants, plus wine merchants and buyers from around the world.
Visitors were able to sample over 800 wines from more than 200 growers, making RAW one of the most exciting, and certainly the largest, collections of fine, organic and biodynamic wine artisans ever to come together in the capital. As well as tastings, the show featured talks from the world’s leading experts and a selection of incredible food from renowned artisan food producers and restaurants including Neal’s Yard Dairy, Violet Cakes, Ducksoup and Elliot’s Café.
Over 350 producers, press and members of the public gathered to toast the fair’s success on Monday evening with a Georgian supra featuring traditional Georgian food and entertainment from a polyphonic choir.
Isabelle Legeron MW – the first French female Master of Wine and presenter of Travel Channel wine programmes – who was behind the event said: “I am so pleased that RAW was so popular, we’re delighted with the number of visitors and the fact that people had a great time and were impressed by the quality of the wines. We’ve had fantastic feedback from producers and visitors alike. Plans are already underway for next year’s event.â€
What people are saying about RAW:
“If natural wine is a niche market, someone forgot to tell the crowd @RAWfair†Robert Macintosh @thirstforwine
“Massive bravo for putting on one of the best wine fairs I’ve ever been to. A real game changer - the space - cool and bright and big, the food - classy and coffee delicious, and the wines, well, I always knew they'd be top $."
Emily O’Hare, The River Café
"May I congratulate all concerned for organising surely one of the most stimulating events of the last ten years in the wine trade. I hope RAW goes from strength to strength."
Matthew Boucher, Cambridge Wine Merchants

Justin Bieber, Peter Andre and Dale Winton have achieved 'legendairy' status by being voted the cheesiest celebs in a recent poll by Pilgrim's Choice. Other stinkers include Tom 'extra mature' Jones, Alexandra Burke, troublesome duo 'Ched-ward' and TOWIE's Mild Joey Essex.
The celebs making it onto the cheeseboard:
Justin Brie-ber Peter Andre WensleDale Winton Tom extra matureJones Joey Essex Jedward Alexandra Burke Tom Cruise Nicole Sherzinger Katie Price
But it seems cheese and glitz could now go hand-in-hand following a new culinary craze of pimping up the 'grate' British sandwich. Spreading its way down the red carpet and injecting some serious glamour into lunchtime; make way for the 'Glamwich'!
Pilgrim's Choice research has shown one in five consumers are now adding fancy fillings to make their lunch more exciting and taking lunch making to an alluring new level:
One third (32%) of all consumers use high-quality cheese to add glamour to a sandwich A fifth (21%) buy more interesting bread to make their packed lunch a more exciting occassion One in ten sandwich makers add olives or pesto (10%) Nearly a fifth (18%) add sweet chilli sauce 12 per cent try to replicate sandwiches they have seen or bought in shops
Alastair Jackson, Marketing Director at Pilgrims Choice said: "It's not just people like Justin Bieber or Joey Essex who can be at the centre of a craze, glamming up our lunchtime is growing in appetite, giving our lunch celeb status when eating 'al desko'."
Taking one step further, Pilgrims Choice will be turning cheese and sandwiches into works of art at the Bath & West Show between May 30th and June 2nd. Consumers are also invited to drop by and have a go at creating their own cheesy masterpieces at the Pilgrims Choice tent.

As Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall's competition inviting schools to create a special menu for The Queen approaches its grand finale at Buckingham Palace in June, the first round of judging has taken place. 16 schools have been selected from over 200 entries to go through to the next round where their menus will be judged by Mark Flanagan, Royal Chef at Buckingham Palace. The top four winning schools will be invited to Buckingham Palace in June to see their recipes prepared by the Royal Chef and will help serve them at a special reception attended by The Queen and The Duchess of Cornwall.
'Cook for The Queen' is the idea of The Duchess of Cornwall and is her special tribute to The Queen for the Diamond Jubilee. As part of British Food Fortnight, the national celebration of food that The Duchess supports, schools across the country have been invited to create a special menu for The Queen that celebrates the food produced in their part of the country.
208 schools entered from across the UK, from the tip of Cornwall in the South to the Shetland Isles in the North. The competition has inspired a huge variety of activities, many running throughout the spring term. There have been class visits to local producers, hotels and farms to learn more about food produced near the school; endless cooking and tasting sessions; competitions between pupils along the lines of Masterchef to select the menu to be submitted as the school's entry with taste panels made up of parents and teachers; and Diamond Jubilee tea parties attended by grannies, parents, members of the local community, producers, Lord Lieutenants and MPs, many of whom have been invited to taste the children's menus. Lots of schools are planning to serve their menus at their school's Diamond Jubilee celebrations in June. Local producers have supported the competition in force, many donating ingredients to schools to assist their entries.
A huge amount of thought has gone into the menus: schools have done lots of research tracing the royal heritage of certain dishes, exploring what sorts of foods the Royal Family has eaten throughout history and learning how to incorporate local foods in their dishes. Some menus commemorate particular moments or places in The Queen's life, for example, The Balmoral Menu and tartlets shaped like boats to commemorate Royal Yacht Britannia. Others follow nursery rhymes such as 'All the Kings Horses' or 'Sing a song of sixpence'. Children paid tribute to The Queen's favourite pets with Corgi Pup Cakes. And many of the dishes are regally with diamond shapes, biscuits using E and R shaped cutters and Union Jack colouring.
Four criteria were used to select the 16 finalists: the amount of class work and extra-curricula research; the use of local produce; whether the menu is truly fit for The Queen; and the incorporation of 'Cook for The Queen' into the school's Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
The 16 finalists are: Ashcombe Primary School from Weston-super-Mare, Barnby Road Academy from Newark, Brae High School from Shetland, Cape Cornwall School near Penzance, Dedham CE Primary School from Colchester, Carr's Glen Primary School from Belfast, Eton End School from Datchet, Gresham's Prep School from Holt in Norfolk, Highfield School (special needs) from Wakefield, Latimer Arts College near Kettering, Longhill High School from Brighton, Pencombe Primary School from Hereford, Roos Church of England Primary School from Hull, St Columba's Primary School from Oban, Sun Hill Junior School from Winchester, Eastington Primary School from Gloucestershire.
The excitement of schools taking part is summed up by Miss McKenna, Primary 7 Teacher at St Columba's Primary School, Oban who said: "The preparation for this competition has grown much bigger than I ever initially planned as the children became so engaged and motivated to learn more and cook increasingly elaborate dishes. It has been a joy to watch the children cooking together and as a result, start cooking at home using local ingredients and spend time coming up with innovative ways to ensure our menu was fit for The Queen! The children's dedication to this competition was in no doubt in my mind when they volunteered to stay in at lunchtime and clean the windows to make sure the room was 'perfect' for our Tea Party guests! It has been a great experience for all involved."

15th National Curry Week |

The 15th National Curry Week 8-14th October 2012 will not only celebrate the fantastic curry houses all over Britain but also acknowledge the influence curry has had on other ethnic cuisines such as Thai, Chinese, Caribbean, Japanese, South African and more.
A recent survey suggested that a massive 87% of Brits enjoy curry at home or in a restaurant each year and 40% go for their "hit" at least once a week. But it is not just Britain that has the curry habit. In Japan their own special curry is one of the nation's favourite dishes and Germany even has a museum as an homage to currywurst. 20 years ago the number of curry restaurants in America was a fraction of the number in Britain despite the huge difference in geographical size but now the curry craze has caught on their as well.
S&A Foods with Asda and Patak's will once again head the sponsorship for the week enabling curry fans to enjoy their favourite food as much at home as they do in curry houses. A team of Curry Ambassadors has been organised around the country to spread the word and "Team Curry", consisting of some of the best Asian restaurants in the country, has been created to offer the perfect shop window for fans to try curry at its best.
The Curry Capital of Britain element of the event has already started in the 20 competing cities around the country and 2011 title holders Bradford have arranged a special pop-up restaurant day to launch their bid with proceeds going to The Curry Tree Charitable Fund. Last year this competition received well over a quarter of a million votes from around the country.
"We have one or two surprises to come that will be announced in due course," commented organiser Peter Grove of The Federation of Specialist Restaurants, "and we will ensure this year's event is the most exciting ever."
